Exploring the world of Carroll depictions through a post myth lens...

Its been a wild few months for me, which is why I forgot to post here for a long while! You may remember that a long while back I posted about a long academic essay I was doing about depictions of Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodgson) in film and TV. I have now very nearly completed what is part 1 of a 2 part retrospective on this.

Throughout these last few months I have been consuming works such as Dreamchild (1985) and Alice (1965) Examining what they say about 20th century thoughts on Dodgson (non surprise: there's a lot of Freudianism and opinions stated as facts...) and what they say about their author, Dennis Potter.

Throughout this reading the work of Will Brooker, especially his study Alice's adventures in Popular Culture, has made me contextualize these portrayals. I hope my final piece of work whenever it is finished, can illuminate truths about Dodgson, and more importantly, how society views and misinterprets as eras stretch further into history.

Due to Covid-19 the theatre and event pages are disappearing for a bit

`All right,’ said the Cat; and this time it vanished quite slowly, beginning with the end of the tail, and ending with the grin, which remained some time after the rest of it had gone.

Due to unforeseen circumstances the list of theatre events and events will disappear for a bit.

Please know that as soon as normal service resumes so will these pages.

Many thanks,

Chloe :)

Update...

Apologies for the lack of reviews for the last few weeks but my laptop decided to break on me. So I couldn't upload the rest of October's reviews or celebrate November 4th (although I managed to on the Facebook page.)

The rest of "Several nice little histories" will be saved till next October.

I'm going to go ahead and start to write up the winter theatre adaptations for UK carrollians, which as per usual will be on the Carrollian Theatre events link. This is a lot harder than most years as a lot of theatres seem to have gone for pantomimes and not traditional Carroll. I'll see what I can find!

A new edition of both Wonderland and Looking Glass is out now and I aim to feature illustrations from it soon.

Thanks for baring with me,

Chloe :)

Slowing down posting (due to university...)

`You are old,’ said the youth, `and your jaws are too weak
 For anything tougher than suet;
Yet you finished the goose, with the bones and the beak—
Pray how did you manage to do it?’

`In my youth,’ said his father, `I took to the law,
And argued each case with my wife;
And the muscular strength, which it gave to my jaw,
Has lasted the rest of my life.’

If there's less posts in the next few weeks, its because I'm currently right at the end of the first year of a 5 year law course.

Which means exams.

So this blog might slow down in the next few weeks.

It will however be back fully in the 3rd week of June post exams!

This is also why Down the rabbit hole project voting is mid June and not at the start!

Many thanks,

Chloe :)

Telegram Carrollian Group

image

I have finally come up with a good solution to the fact that Blogspot has no instant messaging. I would love to keep in contact with this community and friends.

So… I have created a Telegram group for us all!

You can join by clicking this link here.

Oh and er… Happy 4th of May!

Illustration archiving has now begun

Going to be saving my fave carrollian photos/illustrations to this blog in the next few weeks!

Sadly can't save everything but I will choose the loveliest archive illustration posts I have!

Many thanks,

Chloe :)

Update on archival posts

Apologies for all the archival posts but I am hastily transferring old content from tumblr to this blog.

These archival posts will be tagged with Archive post (from old tumblr) to clear up any confusion.

I'm transferring the last few essays and reviews across and hopefully can start photo archive soon!

Thanks for your patience!

Why I left Tumblr: An explanation

I thought I might as well explain why I had to leave tumblr behind.

As there is a vibrant and passionate community of Carrollians on tumblr. And I really, really didn't want to leave.

Unfortunately tumblr policies meant I could not see a future for myself on the platform anymore.

Although my blog was SFW, I was worried that Tumblr's blanket ban on NSFW content would also wrongly flag up SFW content as well.

Sadly since the installation of this new policy, this appears to be the case.

Last time I checked my account, I had 30 + posts flagged for no discernible reason.

I left because I did not want to fight the battle of having to appeal these flagged posts all the time.

I have since found that whilst one post can be reinstated after an appeal, another always gets flagged.

To any friends who are reading this, you can contact me here or by the facebook page.

I really really wish this didn't have to happen.

Many thanks,

Chloe :)

An Update.

What's going to happen to the theatre list and more... An Update.

I will begin listing theatre events (and creating a tag page for theatre adaptations) next year.

The theatre tag page will only cover revivals and productions from 2019 onwards. No use chronicling adaptations which aren't revived (alas, this means Wonder.land won't have a tag... Unless someone revives it next year. Which is extremely unlikely...*sigh*)

The events page will work precisely the same as the one on my old one did!

I will still post old archival post of reviews, down the rabbit hole essays and significant theatrical photos. But I have a lot to get through. Please be patient!

Regarding non Carroll posts, I think they're officially retired at this point!

Thanks,

Chloe :)
