Notification!

Alice in Backlands (original title: Alice Dos Anjos) is now on dailymotion with English subtitles!

Alice (Tiffanie Costa) discovers a bizarre and brilliant land where she encounters even stranger characters. However the community is under threat from a local colonel who will do anything to take the land the community relies on.

This delightful adaptation aired on ARTE1 Brazil a few months ago, after many years round festival circuits in the region. It has a cabinet of trophies to prove its worth now. For us here its most valued as being the technical first adaptation of Carroll's Alice books as a film/TV special since... 1999's NBC attempt.

I'd say more, but really you should just go and enjoy it. This is the first of several adaptations this decade to release (if IMDB is correct fully) so we are nowhere done with Carroll and film yet :)

You can follow announcements for this film officially on instagram :)

Updates

 Get Lost is now filming!

With their instagram all set up, you can now follow the progress of Get Lost as filming takes place in Budapest, Hungary.

Unfortunately I don't want to post photos here as this is perhaps a legal grey area, but I would encourage you to go and follow the film's instagram and associated pages.

Very exciting times for Alice based properties.

Other News:

Manchester's Alice musical Alice in Wonderland has sadly been cancelled due to covid, but many outdoor events are still going ahead. A new theatre list will be on this blog soon.

I'm still writing the essays for Celine and Julie Go Boating (1974), they are coming, I promise.

Yesterday V and A museum announced that their Alice exhibition would be screening as a film in October (On October the 14 to be exact) more info here

Irish National Opera announced a few weeks back that Gerald Barry's Alice opera will be streaming online in November. Info here

Alice film festival "Through the Looking Glass" in Amsterdam, Netherlands until January!

The programme includes the very first Alice in Wonderland film adaptation dating from 1903, next to the well-known Disney animation of 1951 as well as Tim Burton’s 3D reinterpretation of the Disney film, made in 2010 … on behalf of the same Disney company
The programme also includes films by directors who were directly or indirectly inspired by the story of a little girl that crawls into a rabbit hole and finds herself in a world where animals can speak and a riddle best remains a riddle.
Talking with fantasy creatures and being able to move in an alien world without any effort: Terry Gilliam, Lana and Lilly Wachowski, and Roman Polanski they all found Carroll’s ‘fall into the rabbit hole’ irresistible as well.

Alice film festival "Through the Looking-Glass" begins in Amsterdam, Netherlands this month at Eyefilm Museum.

The 8 film festival features alongside Alice: The Virtual Reality play, a VR experience.

1903, 1951 disney, 1988 Jan Svankmajer and 2010 burton will all be screening alongside more unusual picks such as Wild at Heart (1990) Che? (1972) The Matrix (1999) and Tideland (2006)

Like ACMI's Alice is everywhere festival, this film festival is for an adult audience and features  subversive down the rabbit hole trope films.

Starts 22nd of december, ends 5th of January!

Camera Filming CONFIRMED for Gerald Barry's Alice opera

So an extremely interesting development has occured in regards to the Gerald Barry opera premiere at ROH next year. At least 4 performances have the "Cameras filming" icon next to them.

Filming: there will be cameras in the auditorium or studio. In the main auditorium, some sightlines may be affected by the cameras, and tickets for these seats are sold only over the phone and are not available online.

ROH only tend to do this when a production is either being filmed for cinema, TV or DVD broadcast or release.

I doubt this will be for a radio broadcast or CD release as this is not normally indicated by the filming icon and there are at least 4 performances which will be filmed.

I have mentioned before that the premiere is a co production with Irish National Opera, who have a partnership with Irish TV channel RTE.

As for what this filming will be used for.... I'll keep you posted as always if I hear anything.

1970 Jean Christophe Averty version now on streaming in France...

(Utterly lovely press photo courtesy of Ebay seller lacenaire)

I'm slow to the uptake again.

Apparently Jean Christophe Averty's blue screen version of Alice's adventures in Wonderland from 1970 since 2016 has been available to stream officially on INA.FR with a seemingly better quality than the recording I discovered way back in 2014!

Please note: there are no subtitles in English or any other language at the moment...

If you're French or can understand French, please let me know if the quality is better!

Gerald Barry's Alice opera gets Official World Premiere at ROH!

Thank you Royal Opera!

Possibly to make up for the now lost Unsuk Chin Looking-Glass, Royal Opera will instead present the first staged non concert premiere of Gerald Barry's Alice's adventures Underground. This will be in February, and will run for only 9 performances (!)

Fun, furious, frantic, and utterly fantastic! The surreal world of Lewis Carroll’s Alice, both in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, is given an extra twist in Gerald Barry’s operatic treatment. Antony McDonald (of 2018/19’s Hansel and Gretel) directs and designs this new production – the first ever staging of this musically virtuoso opera – with more than a touch of the Victorian toy theatre. The Red Queen, the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter: meet a kaleidoscope of colourful characters in this joyful, headlong rush into a world gone deliciously mad.

Last year I reviewed the concert radio broadcast, but this will be a whole production!

Adapting both Wonderland and Looking-Glass, Barry's opera flits wildly from one event to the next, making it one of the most dreamlike Alice adaptations out there!

This new production is with INO (Irish National opera) who have broadcast links with RTE (Irish TV) Hmmm....

Night is short Walk on Girl novella release now July... (according to the publisher)

Image result for Night is short walk on girl novel

The English translation of  "Night is short..." will now be released on the 23rd of July.

Weirdly amazon's UK page contradicts this, but the publisher has now stated July so...

*shrugs*

Although its been put back I honestly don't mind as long as the translation is of good quality.

now the release is (maybe) in July it makes for good carrollian July reading...

And of course I'll review it for this blog (alongside the film version!)

Benjamin Lacombe's Coraline illustrations have been cancelled....

NOTE JANUARY 2025: NEIL GAIMAN IS AN ABUSER, I WROTE THIS PIECE FAR BEFORE ANYONE KNEW. PLEASE READ THE SIDE OF NEIL GAIMAN HIS FANS NEVER SAW, BY LAUREN STARKE (TRIGGER WARNINGS APPLY)

*sigh* This would have been so good...

Not honestly sure entirely what has happened, but it appears Benjamin Lacombe's illustrated edition of Neil Gaiman's Coraline has been cancelled or dropped.

Sometimes, even if it’s a little disappointing , you got to let down some projects. Because it’s not the right moment, because you don’t feel it deep inside, because the stars aren't aligned. This is what is happening with my illustrated version of Coraline.
However Lacombe did post a illustration for Coraline so we aren't entirely missing out...

Here is one image I did for this project (it’s not completely finished)

Case for a Rookie Hangman (1970) Second Run announcement....

Image may contain: one or more people, people sitting, shoes and outdoor

That is a hare wearing a waistcoat, and carrying a watch.

Case for a Rookie Hangman (1970) is nominally a Gulliver's travels adaptation, but is also inspired by the works of Kafka and yes, Carroll.

More on this soon (hopefully!)

I only found out about this after reviewing Valerie and her Week of Wonders and Daisies, so I guess reviewing old Carroll inspired Czech films for down the Rabbit Hole Project was a really good idea!

Image via Second Run DVD, who have listed this for release soon...

ACMI's Wonderland exhibit in Singpore: Extras

Wondreland

So ACMI's massive retrospective on Carroll, Alice and culture opened in Singapore on Saturday on its first tour stop.

As I hoped, there is an extra attached:

Image may contain: 3 people, people sitting

Alice is everywhere film festival

Not what you might think.

This one is a bit complex: the 2018 Australian premiere also had a film festival with this title, but unfortunately the Singapore version does not have the depth of the 2018 ACMI fest.

Instead of showing films inspired by Carroll's books, Singapore's Alice is Everywhere offers up 3 versions of Alice. These are 1951, 1933 and 1966 BBC.

They are only on for three weeks starting now.

Whilst this is always extremely welcome, it feels a little weak in comparison with the original ACMI festival which had 10 + films, many rarities.

I have no idea why only 3 films are being shown. I also have no idea if this Alice is Everywhere  will become the standard touring version..... I hope not.

Mark Anthony Turnage's Coraline Opera gets MAJOR new 2019 production

NOTE JANUARY 2025: NEIL GAIMAN IS AN ABUSER, I WROTE THIS PIECE FAR BEFORE ANYONE KNEW. PLEASE READ THE SIDE OF NEIL GAIMAN HIS FANS NEVER SAW, BY LAUREN STARKE (TRIGGER WARNINGS APPLY)

This in from the excellent Opernhaus Zurich, playing from the 16th of November - April next year:

Coraline discovers a mysterious door, gathers her courage and crawls through. At first glance, the Other world in which she ends up feels very familiar: Actually, everything is like home. But Coraline's parents are suddenly terribly nice, cook delicious meals and are ready to fulfill all their wishes. However, there is one condition: to stay here forever, Coraline would have to swap her eyes for two buttons ...
Coraline’s fantastical and sinister experiences are reminiscent of literary classics such as Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland or E.T.A. Hoffmann’s The Sandman, yet tell a very modern coming-of-age story.

 And cast announcements (via Operawire

Nina Russi will lead the new production with Ann-Katrin Stöcker as conductor. The cast will include Deanna Breiwick and Sandra Hamaoui alternating the title role, while Irène Friedli, Judith Schmid will play Mother. Other cast members include Ronan Collett, Robin Adams, Iain Milne, Spencer Lang, and Sen Guo, among others.
Opernhaus Zurich is one of Austria's biggest Opera companies, and has a working relationship with DVD distributors ARTE and Accentus Music.

As Coraline is one of the biggest announcements for Opernhaus Zurich's new season, a DVD is highly likely!

As always will report if there's any news on this!
